In winter, Zanskar is cut off from the world for 6 months. Life slows down, work in the fields is impossible, schools are often closed. The only way (waiting the completion of the construction of THE road…) to connect Zanskar with the rest of Ladakh is the Chaddar: it is the name of the Zanskar River when it is frozen.
Global warming here too is causing damage, the “window” to walk on the ice is shrinking from year to year. The trek is still possible in January and February.
Tsultim has been practicing Chaddar since childhood. He has a perfect knowledge of this environment.
(Temperatures, especially at night, can drop below -30 degrees. If this trek is not difficult because of its altitude difference, it can be difficult because of the weather conditions.)
